The BBC reported that the Government has commissioned a study into the ‘alleged’ incidents of fumes on board aircraft.  The Cranfield University will apparently carry out a study over the next 2 years to determine the source and nature of the fume events.

I was particulary intrigued when the demonstrator of the equipment in the BBC report stated that he was going to test the equipment using meths!  He advised the reporter that he did not want to use Organosphosphates!  I was disappointed that the reporter did not ask the obvious question, “Why is that?”

The Global Cabin Air Quality Executive have put out their own spirited rebuttal of the study, highlighting the errors in the study and how there already exists a vast amount of data to prove the existence of various fumes in aircraft and their effect on humans!

I tend to agree with the GCAQE.  From where I sit, I predict the steady increase in holiday poisoning claims arising from journeys in poorly maintained aircraft.  Instead of wringing their hands, government should be following our recommendations within our ‘Brown Bag Campaign’ and insisting that all aircraft using UK airspace should also be fitted with Carbon Monoxide detectors!
