Holiday Sickness and Food Poisoning

Holiday sickness, for example food poisoning, is one of the most common complaints Holiday Travel Watch receive.

It is estimated that some 60 million visits abroad are made by Britons each year. The range of destinations is as wide as it is varied.

Since 1996 HolidayTravelWatch has dealt with over 130,000 people and their travel complaints.

Many of their problems are health related and the traveller is often ‘persuaded’ that it is a disease ‘brought in by the holidaymakers’, ‘a virus’ or ‘you are in a third world country’.

Some tour operator representatives have been known to describe those who complain about holiday illnesses as ‘gossips’ or whingers’.

These diseases are potentially life threatening, can cause long term illnesses, and dramatically affect daily lives - such as Adenovirus.

Before you go, or if you find yourself in resort suffering from one of these illnesses, reading our guidance on how to prepare before you go, or to take action whilst you are away, or how to resolve your complaint, either whilst you are on holiday, or when you return home will provide you with the necessary information to anticipate or deal with problems you may encounter.

You may also find helpful our page which provides you with free complaint letters to help you to resolve your holiday claim for compensation. If yoy have some concern of travel safety issues, then use our free letters to ‘Whistleblow for Safety’.

All of these sections will provide you with good basic information on what type of diseases you may encounter, how to deal with problems in resort when you have a holiday complaint, or if you are trying to resolve a holiday claim either in resort or when you return to the UK.
