When using self-catering apartments and villas make sure you know and understand how to use the appliances provided.
Check that any fridge or freezer doors close properly otherwise you may find yourself slipping on a pool of water if you need to get up in the middle of the night.
If there are any leaking taps or pipes, report them to the owner or his/her representative and ensure they are fixed promptly.
Prevent small children from being in the kitchen area.
Cookers abroad may not be securely fixed to the wall to avoid tilting forward.
Do not assume that appliances will have all the safety features found at home.
Beware electrical appliances or lighting that have suspect wiring – if in doubt, do not use the appliance or lighting, and report it immediately to the tour operator’s representative or the management of the apartment.
Where there is a gas water heater installed, note any smells or build up of residues. If in doubt, do not use the water heater, ensure that the apartment is well ventilated, follows the advices contained on the Carbon Monoxide and Gas Safety Society website.
