Get Away Travelzine - Issue 6 - May 2008

In this latest edition, our lead article highlights the growing trends at the start of the 2008 main holiday season. Holiday illness or sickness remain highly featured, accompanied by poor hygiene standards. We note also the rise of complaints of sick aircraft syndrome and ’significant change’ events to holidays. We note the ’smorgasbord’ approach by travel companies, which fails to ensure that travel consumers are treated fairly!

Our main article deals with the problem of no insurance cover to risk destinations, suggesting a course of action to be followed by the travel consumer. Our guest feature is written by the President of International Cruise Victims, which provides an update on how cruise companies are being called to account for their inaction. We supplement that article with a case study of a serious cruise ship incident, reported to us by a British Family.

We highlight a safety issue regarding the use of carbon-fibre composites in aircraft, noting the failure of current testing methods, which led to a serious incident on board a Canadian passenger aircraft. We ask how long must passengers wait before correct testing of carbon-fibre aircraft is made? We continue our series on ‘To Package or Not to Package’ - we examine the recent effect of the long awaited Government Guidance as to what constitutes a package holiday! Our regular feature, The HolidayTravelWatch Clinic examines an appalling case of ’significant changes’ to a British holidaymaker’s package holiday, and set out her rights under The Package Travel Regulations.

Continuing with our series on ‘Are Kids Clubs Safe?’ we provide comment and guidance on what may be the appropriate standard in kids clubs play areas, suggesting that parents may wish to raise these questions with British Tour Operators. Our Package Travel Regulations Tip provides brief guidance on when tour operators may make price revisions to your holiday contracts.
